Throughout my life I have always had a great love and, I think even more important, a deep respect for dogs. I had long been concerned at the methods used by some ‘Dog Trainers’ ranging from the useless to the barbaric. During my 35 years Police service, most of which was as a dog handler, I always tried to the approach the training of my dogs in a more natural, stress-free way and understand the dogs’ perception of what I was asking them to do. I then discovered Jan Fennell and Amichien Bonding and I was hooked! The lights were switched on! On retirement I attended courses with Jan and obtained the ‘Advanced Certificate in Canine Communication’ and became a ‘Dog Listener’. I have worked with dogs for over 30 years with their welfare as my first concern. For me, working as a Dog Listener is the culmination of a lifelong involvement with dogs. From early childhood when my father bred Golden Retrievers, through my teenage years when I competed with several Collies and German Shepherds in local obedience competitions and later to my daily shepherding work and weekend sheepdog trials with my three Border Collies. I have practised this method faithfully for nine years with my Siberian Husky, Dion-blue with fantastic results and ended up with a dog I was so proud of. I had reluctantly used the traditional method of obedience but now I do not even use the word.
